Waterfront & Shoreline Retaining Walls in the Okanagan
Lakefront property comes with a different set of forces than a hillside yard — wave action, fluctuating water levels, and ice shove. We design and build shoreline retaining walls engineered specifically for life on Okanagan, Kalamalka, and Wood Lake.

Retaining walls generally range from $8,000 to more than $100,000, depending on wall height, length, material, drainage, access and engineering requirements.
Wall length × average wall height = wall-face square footage
This calculator provides an early budget range only and is not a formal quote. Final pricing depends on site access, existing conditions, excavation, grading, drainage, material selections, engineering, permits, electrical and plumbing requirements, and the final approved design. Pricing is shown in Canadian dollars and excludes GST unless otherwise stated. A site consultation is required to provide an accurate proposal.
Built for the Water’s Edge, Not Just the Slope
A standard hillside retaining wall is built to hold soil against gravity. A waterfront wall has to do that and stand up to wave action, seasonal water-level swings, saturated backfill, and winter ice pushing against the face. We treat shoreline walls as their own category of build, not a variation on a garden-terrace wall. That means different footings, different drainage strategy, and material choices that can tolerate being wet, frozen, and battered by boat wake for decades. On Okanagan, Kalamalka, and Wood Lake properties, we’ve seen what happens when a wall is built without accounting for these forces — it fails at the toe first, then undermines everything above it. Ours are designed so the toe holds.
Waterfront & Shoreline Retaining Walls: Materials & Process
Waterfront walls start below the waterline, not above it. We build proper footings set below expected scour depth, with rip-rap or armour stone toe protection to break up wave energy before it reaches the wall face. Behind the wall, drainage is non-negotiable — clear-stone backfill and perforated drain tile relieve the hydrostatic pressure that builds up as lake levels rise through spring runoff, so the wall isn’t fighting trapped water on top of everything else. For the face itself, we typically recommend large armour stone or engineered block systems rated for submerged and freeze-thaw conditions over lighter garden wall units, which weren’t designed for constant wet-dry cycling. Where a property calls for it, we also incorporate dock resurfacing, stepped access down to the water, and terracing above the wall to turn a steep shoreline lot into usable, level outdoor living space.
Foreshore Considerations, Handled Alongside Your Design
Work on or near the shoreline of a large Okanagan lake can fall under provincial foreshore protection requirements, and depending on the scope, may also touch on local municipal permitting. We build this into the process from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought: we help you understand what your project will likely need to move forward, coordinate the required documentation, and design walls with setbacks and construction methods that respect the shoreline environment. If your project also needs sign-off from the municipality, our Permits & Regulations service works alongside your wall build to keep the paperwork moving in step with construction.

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners
“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
Common Questions About Waterfront & Shoreline Retaining Walls
How is a waterfront retaining wall different from a standard hillside wall?
A standard hillside wall holds soil against gravity. A waterfront wall also has to stand up to wave action, seasonal water-level swings, saturated backfill, and winter ice pushing against the face — different footings, drainage, and materials built to tolerate being wet, frozen, and battered by boat wake for decades.
Do waterfront walls need special permits?
Yes — shoreline work on the Okanagan’s large lakes falls under the Okanagan Large Lakes Foreshore Protocol in addition to standard municipal permitting; see our Foreshore & Shoreline Permits page for the full process.
Can a waterfront wall stop my property from losing land to erosion?
Yes, that is one of its core jobs — a properly engineered shoreline wall protects valuable waterfront land from wave action and seasonal erosion while creating a stable edge for patios, lawns, or pathways above it.
What materials hold up best against ice and boat wake?
We select materials and footings specifically rated to tolerate being wet, frozen, and repeatedly battered — a different material conversation than a standard garden-terrace wall, and we will walk through the right option for your shoreline during a consultation.
