The Brief

Homeowners across Vernon increasingly come to us with the same front lawn frustration: a thirsty patch of turf that struggles through the Okanagan’s hot, dry summers no matter how much water it gets, and that demands mowing and feeding for a look nobody is especially attached to. For this property, the goal was to replace a traditional grass lawn with a planting design that would look intentional and attractive year-round while asking far less of the irrigation system and the homeowner’s weekends.

The Approach

Vernon sits in one of the driest, sunniest pockets of the Okanagan Valley, with light, fast-draining soils and long stretches of summer heat that put real stress on conventional lawns. Rather than fight that climate, our design leaned into it — grouping plants by water need, using drought-tolerant grasses, perennials, and shrubs suited to the local growing zone, and shaping the bed lines so the space reads as a designed landscape rather than a lawn that was simply removed. Grading and drainage were addressed first, since a xeriscape planting still needs water to move away from the foundation and off the property correctly, especially on Vernon’s sloped residential lots.

What We Built

The finished bed combines drought-tolerant plantings with a mulched groundcover to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and reduce the need for frequent watering, along with defined edging to keep the design crisp against walkways and driveway. As with all our xeriscaping work, plant selection favoured species that establish well in the Okanagan’s climate and, once rooted, require substantially less irrigation than a comparable area of turf — a general water-savings principle well documented in xeriscape design, and one of the main reasons the approach continues to gain traction across the valley. The result is a low-maintenance, visually layered planting bed that holds interest through the seasons instead of going brown in August.
