Lumby FireSmart Redesign: A forest-edge yard rebuilt around defensible-space principles

The Brief

Lumby sits where the Monashee foothills meet the Shuswap River valley, and a lot of properties out here back directly onto Crown forest or dense treed acreage. For homeowners in that setting, the brief we hear again and again is some version of the same request: keep the yard feeling like it belongs in the forest, but stop giving a wildfire anything to grab onto near the house. This client wanted an outdoor living space they could actually use — a gathering area with a firepit, room to sit outside on summer evenings — without the tangle of bark mulch, resinous shrubs, and dry grass pressed right up against the foundation that so many forest-edge yards default to.

The Approach

We designed the redesign around the FireSmart BC Home Ignition Zone framework, starting with the immediate zone within 1.5 metres of the structure. That zone is treated as a non-combustible perimeter — no wood mulch, no combustible shrubs, no debris-catching corners — and instead uses hardscape, gravel, and low fire-resistant groundcovers to break the path an ember would otherwise take toward the siding or under a deck. Moving outward through the broader FireSmart zones, we thinned and spaced plantings, chose fire-resistant species over resinous evergreens near the house, and kept sightlines open so the property reads as intentionally landscaped rather than left wild. Lumby’s terrain and interface location made this a genuinely relevant project for defensible-space thinking, not a generic add-on.

What We Built

The centrepiece is a paver patio built with non-combustible hardscape materials, anchoring a stone firepit as the outdoor gathering space the homeowners wanted. Because the patio itself sits inside the non-combustible zone, it does double duty: usable living space and a physical fuel break in one. Surrounding plant beds were replanted with fire-resistant, low-maintenance species selected for the Okanagan’s dry summer climate, spaced to avoid continuous fuel runs back toward the treeline. The result is a yard that still feels connected to the forest setting that drew the homeowners to Lumby in the first place, but is measurably better prepared for wildfire season.
