Entertainer’s Retreat: A built-in outdoor kitchen and fire feature build

The Brief

Homeowners across West Kelowna’s hillside neighbourhoods — from Tallus Ridge and Lakeview Heights to the Shannon Lake area — tend to ask us for the same thing: a backyard built for hosting, not just landscaping. This project came together around that idea. The clients wanted a single outdoor space where cooking, dining, and gathering around a fire could all happen without anyone leaving the patio, replacing a portable barbecue and a patchwork of mismatched furniture with something built to last through Okanagan summers.

The Approach

West Kelowna’s terrain is part of what makes it beautiful and part of what makes it demanding to build on. Many lots on the west side sit on a grade, with bedrock and clay subsoil common through the benches above Okanagan Lake, and long, hot, dry summers that put real stress on outdoor structures and plant material. We planned the kitchen and patio as one continuous zone, oriented to make the most of lake-and-valley views while keeping smoke and heat from the fire feature clear of the seating area. Where the yard’s natural grade came into play, we worked with it rather than against it, keeping the patio level and properly drained so the space holds up through freeze-thaw cycles and summer heat alike.

What We Built

At the centre of the project is a fully built-in BBQ island, framed and clad in durable masonry veneer with stone countertops that can take the heat and weather of a working outdoor kitchen year after year. It’s set into a paver patio using a segmental paving base built to handle Okanagan freeze-thaw cycles without heaving or shifting. A fire feature anchors a second seating zone a few steps away, giving the space two natural gathering points — one for cooking and dining, one for winding down after dark. The result is an outdoor room that functions the way the clients actually live: appliances and counter space where the cooking happens, and a separate spot to relax once the meal is done.
