Drought-tolerant plant palette selected specifically for West Kelowna’s summer heat
The Brief
Front yards like this one are the first thing a visitor, buyer, or the homeowner themselves sees every day, and this West Kelowna property is a good example of a front yard that had good bones but hadn’t been given a real design plan. There was lawn, there were a few established plants near the foundation, and there was a walkway to the door — but none of it had been tied together with an actual layout. The goal for a project in this category is straightforward: replace a flat, undefined space with clean bed lines, healthy plantings, and a layout that actually guides visitors to the front door instead of leaving the eye to wander.
The Approach
We start every curb appeal project with a 3D landscape design so the homeowner can see the finished yard — bed shapes, plant placement, walkway lines, and materials — before a single shovel goes in the ground. That step matters more on a front yard than almost anywhere else on the property, because a front yard is judged as a whole composition from the street, not room by room. In West Kelowna specifically, that design also has to account for a hot, dry summer climate and, on many lots, a slope or grade change between the street and the house. That means thinking through where water will actually go after a spring rain, choosing plants that hold up to Okanagan sun and long stretches without rainfall, and shaping planting beds so they read clearly from the sidewalk rather than blending into an undifferentiated stretch of lawn.
What We Built
The result is a layout of crisply edged planting beds set against a healthy, well-maintained lawn, with drought-tolerant and low-water plant selections chosen for the West Kelowna climate rather than higher-maintenance varieties that struggle here once the summer heat sets in. Bed lines were cut clean and consistent along the walkway and foundation, so the whole yard reads as one finished, intentional design instead of a patchwork of individual plantings added over the years. Mulch and edging were used to keep those lines sharp and to reduce competition from weeds, and plant spacing was set with mature size in mind so the beds will still look proportioned in a few years rather than overgrown. It’s the kind of project that doesn’t need a dramatic centerpiece to make a real difference — a well-considered design, the right plant palette for the region, and clean execution do most of the work.
