Recreational Pond & Waterfall: A recreational pond build

The Brief

This Lake Country homeowner wanted a real, full-scale recreational pond rather than a small ornamental water feature — something with enough depth and volume to support fish and act as a genuine backyard destination, not just background noise. The goal was a natural-looking pond with a cascading waterfall entry, built into a section of yard that already had some natural grade to work with.

The Approach

Lake Country’s terrain gave us a head start: many properties here have exactly the kind of elevation change that makes a gravity-fed waterfall feel effortless rather than forced. Our design team worked the pond’s shape and the waterfall’s fall line into the existing slope so the water reads as something the land was always meant to do, not an add-on. Because a full recreational pond is a much bigger undertaking than a pondless feature — it holds a real volume of water, needs proper filtration and circulation, and has to be engineered to handle our Okanagan freeze-thaw cycles without heaving liner or cracking rock work — we spent real time on the underlying mechanics before a single stone went in: sizing the pump and filtration to the pond’s volume, planning skimmer and bottom-drain placement, and setting the liner and underlayment deep enough to shrug off winter.

What We Built

The finished pond centers on a multi-tier rock waterfall built from natural boulders and fieldstone, set to create both the sound and the movement homeowners actually want to sit next to. Below it, the pond itself was excavated and lined for the depth and volume a recreational, koi-capable pond requires, with a filtration and circulation system sized to keep the water clear through the growing season. Edge stone was set to hide the liner completely and tie the pond into the surrounding planting beds, so from every angle it reads as a natural feature of the property rather than a constructed one. The result is a backyard water feature the whole family can gather around, one that will keep doing its job well after the first winter.
