Artificial turf in the Okanagan typically runs $15-25 per square foot installed, with most residential projects landing between $8,000 and $50,000+. The final number depends on the grade of turf, the condition of your existing yard, and how much site prep and drainage work is needed before a single blade goes down.
What Drives the Price Per Square Foot
Artificial turf pricing is quoted per square foot because the two biggest cost drivers — turf product and base preparation — scale directly with area. Here’s how the three tiers break down:
Standard Turf: $15-19/sq ft
This tier covers a straightforward install on a yard with reasonable existing grade: excavation to the standard base depth, compacted road base and drainage rock, a weed barrier, and a mid-weight turf product suited to general lawn areas, side yards, and low-traffic zones. It’s the right fit for most flat, easily accessible residential lots.
Premium Turf: $19-23/sq ft
This tier steps up to a denser, more realistic turf product — longer pile height, multi-tone blade coloring, and often a heavier face weight that holds up better to sun exposure and daily foot traffic. It’s the common choice for front yards, entertaining areas, and spaces where the turf needs to look convincing up close.
Pet-Friendly / Difficult Install: $23-28+/sq ft
Pet-friendly systems add a permeable, antimicrobial backing and a deeper drainage base designed to flush urine and odor rather than let it pool, which matters in a yard that gets used hard by dogs. This tier also covers installs complicated by tight access, existing hardscape or sod removal, or significant grading — all of which add labor time regardless of the turf product chosen.
What’s Actually Included in the Per-Square-Foot Rate
A proper turf install isn’t just rolling out product on top of dirt. The rate covers excavation to the correct base depth (typically 3-4 inches for standard applications), a compacted aggregate base engineered for drainage, geotextile fabric to prevent weed growth and base migration, the turf itself, seaming and secure perimeter anchoring, and infill (usually silica sand or a zeolite/antimicrobial blend for pet areas) brushed into the pile to keep the blades upright and add ballast.
Universal Cost Adjustments
A few site conditions apply across every project regardless of turf grade: limited access adds 10-20%, very difficult or hand-access sites (steep slopes, no equipment access, tight side yards) add 20-35%, removing existing sod, concrete, or hardscape adds 10-25%, moderate slope grading adds 10-20%, and steep slope sites require an on-site consultation before pricing can be finalized. Premium base materials or specialty turf products can add another 15-35%.

Okanagan-Specific Factors for Artificial Turf
Artificial turf has become popular in Vernon and Kelowna partly because of the Okanagan’s semi-arid climate and the water restrictions that come with it — a well-installed synthetic lawn eliminates the irrigation demand that natural grass needs to survive our hot, dry summers. Drainage design still matters here, though: our region sees hard freeze-thaw cycles through winter, so a base built without adequate drainage rock can trap water, heave, and shorten the life of the install. On sloped Okanagan lots — common on hillside properties around Vernon and Kelowna — grading and retention become part of the base prep, which is why steep-slope sites need a site visit rather than a phone estimate. South- and west-facing yards with intense summer sun exposure also benefit from choosing a higher-quality turf fiber that resists UV fading and heat buildup better than budget-grade product.
