You’re Not Alone If…
You’ve gotten quotes that feel priced to make a small job go away, with no real explanation of the cost.
You’re not sure if your sloping yard, aging retaining wall, or bare patch of dirt needs a designer, a mason, or just a plan.
You’ve been burned by a contractor who disappeared after the deposit, or a project with no single point of contact.
You want to see your finished yard before anyone touches a shovel, not find out after it’s already built.

Blind Bay and Sorrento sit along the Sorrento (Notch) Arm of Shuswap Lake, roughly an hour and fifteen minutes northeast of Vernon via Highway 97A and the Trans-Canada. Together they make up one of the Shuswap’s most established lakefront and retirement corridors, drawing homeowners who traded city lots for waterfront acreages, sloped view properties, and quiet cul-de-sacs near the Shuswap Lake Estates golf course. Many of the properties we see here were built decades ago on rock-and-clay hillsides that step steeply down toward the water, which means the outdoor spaces homeowners actually want, a level patio, a safe stairway to the dock, a retaining wall that finally stops a slope from sliding, take real engineering, not just planting beds. It is also a region where houseboat traffic and destination tourism through Shuswap Lake Provincial Park and the surrounding marinas bring seasonal visitors through all summer, so a well-built outdoor space here does double duty as a private retreat and a place worth showing off to family who come up for the long weekend.
Designing With the Slope
Sorrento’s small downtown along the highway and Blind Bay’s quieter residential loops each have their own character, but the design brief we hear most often is the same: homeowners want their outdoor living space to work with the slope of the land instead of fighting it. That often means terraced patios connected by paver pathways rather than one flat expanse, low retaining walls that double as seating, and planting choices that hold soil on a bank as well as they look good doing it. We walk every site in person before we design anything, because on Shuswap terrain a plan that looks fine on paper can miss a drainage issue or a grade change that only shows up on foot.

“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
Designing and Building for Blind Bay & Sorrento’s Climate and Terrain
Retaining Walls & Freeze-Thaw Durability
Shuswap Lake properties present a different design challenge than a flat valley-bottom lot. Many Blind Bay and Sorrento homes sit on grades that drop sharply toward the water, so retaining walls are often the first thing that has to be right before patios, pathways, or planting beds can go in at all. Freeze-thaw cycles through the Shuswap winter put real stress on poorly built walls and unsealed pavers, which is why we engineer for the region’s clay and rock subsoils rather than treating every lot the same. For homes backing onto forested hillsides above the lake, we also design with wildfire exposure in mind, our FireSmart Defensive Landscaping service builds defensible space using fire-resistant plantings and hardscape buffers without giving up the natural character that drew you to the Shuswap in the first place. And because so many Blind Bay and Sorrento properties are retirement or vacation homes, we plan xeriscaped and low-maintenance beds that hold up well whether you’re there every week or every other month.
Sun, Wind & Design Permitting
Summers here run hot and dry like the rest of the interior, but lakefront lots add their own wrinkle: reflected heat and light off the water, wind funnelling down the arm of the lake, and soil that shifts from sandy near the shoreline to heavy clay farther up the bank. Our planting plans account for all three, choosing drought-tolerant species that still thrive with the extra light bounce and won’t topple in a stiff lake breeze. If you’re planning any new build or major renovation near the water, we can also help you think through the permitting side of the project, our 3D Landscape Design process gives you and, where needed, your local building department a clear picture of the finished grade and structures before a single paver goes down.
