Full Backyard Transformation: A paver patio, planting & lighting build

The Brief

This Kelowna backyard came to us the way a lot of our favourite projects do: a homeowner with an underused patch of grass and a wish list that touched almost every part of what we do. Rather than tackle one feature at a time, they wanted a single cohesive plan that turned the whole space into somewhere they’d actually use — a paved area for sitting and entertaining, planting that looked good in every season, and lighting that made the space feel finished after dark.

The Approach

Full backyard transformations are where our design-build model earns its keep. Instead of coordinating separate contractors for hardscaping, planting, and electrical, our own crews handled the entire sequence from initial grading through final lighting hookup, working off one 3D design so every piece was planned to work together rather than bolted on afterward. In the Okanagan, that coordination matters more than it might elsewhere: our clay-heavy soils and freeze-thaw winters demand proper base preparation under any paved surface, and plant choices need to hold up to both summer heat and dry spells without turning into a maintenance burden the homeowner didn’t ask for.

What We Built

The core of the space is a paver patio, built on a properly compacted aggregate base and edge-restrained to resist the shifting that under-built patios suffer through Okanagan winters. Around it, we shaped planting beds using drought-tolerant, regionally suited species selected for structure and year-round interest rather than a high-water-demand lawn look. Low-voltage path and accent lighting ties the whole layout together, extending use of the patio and beds well into the evening and giving the property a finished, considered look after sundown. The result reads as one continuous space rather than a patchwork of separate projects.
