Recirculating pondless design — no open basin to maintain

The Brief

Properties near Okanagan Lake carry a particular kind of pressure — the view is already doing a lot of work, so anything added to the yard has to earn its place beside it. This Kelowna homeowner wanted a water feature that would read as a natural extension of the shoreline rather than a backyard add-on, paired with a hard-surface area that could handle everyday lake-life traffic: bare feet, wet dogs, and evenings that stretch late into the summer.

The Approach

Kelowna’s lakefront lots typically bring a mix of the same three variables to the table: grade change down toward the water, sandy-to-clay soil that behaves differently depending on how close you are to the shore, and a strong incentive to keep sightlines to the lake open. We designed around those conditions rather than against them — using a naturalized, pondless waterfall-and-stream layout that follows the existing slope instead of fighting it, so the sound and movement of water carries toward the sitting areas without a raised pond wall interrupting the view. Where the terrain leveled out closer to the house, we planned a paver surface sized for entertaining, tying the two zones together with a shared material and planting palette.

What We Built

The water feature uses a recirculating, pondless design — no open basin to maintain, just a hidden reservoir feeding a stacked natural-stone stream bed and waterfall drop, the same approach we use across our water features work. The stone was selected to weather in with the region’s natural rock rather than stand out against it. Alongside it, we laid a paver patio system engineered with a compacted base and proper drainage slope — essential on any lakeside lot, where runoff has to be managed responsibly rather than simply directed toward the water. The result is a space that sounds and feels like it belongs on the property, not one that was dropped into it.

What Clients Say

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners

“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
