Artificial Turf Backyard: A full backyard artificial turf install

The Brief

This Vernon homeowner came to us with a familiar Okanagan problem: a backyard lawn that either browned out every August or demanded more water and mowing time than it was worth. They wanted a lawn that stayed green and usable all season — for kids, pets, and entertaining — without the irrigation bill or the weekend upkeep. A full backyard artificial turf install was the right fit for the space and the way the family actually uses their yard.

The Approach

Vernon’s dry, hot summers and heavy clay-and-rock subsoil are hard on natural grass, and they’re exactly the conditions synthetic turf is built to handle. Before any turf goes down, the real work happens below grade: excavating the existing sod, grading for drainage, and building a compacted aggregate base so the finished lawn stays flat, drains well after storms, and doesn’t shift or settle over time. Getting that base right is what separates a turf lawn that looks good for one season from one that looks good for fifteen.

What We Built

We installed a full backyard synthetic turf system over a properly compacted base, with sand infill to keep the blades standing upright and the surface stable underfoot. Seams were placed and secured so the transitions disappear once the grass fibers are brushed in, and the perimeter was cleanly edged against the existing patio and planting beds for a finished, intentional look. The result is a backyard that stays even, green, and ready for use through the driest part of the Okanagan summer, with none of the mowing, fertilizing, or watering a natural lawn would need.
