A fire-resistant plant palette is narrower and more specific: it’s the actual planting plan for the beds and borders inside that strategy — which species go in, how they’re grouped, and how far apart they sit. Two properties can have identical fuel-break layouts and very different fire behavior depending on whether the beds are planted with dense, resinous evergreens crowded against the siding or with well-spaced, high-moisture shrubs and perennials. Fire-Resistant Plant Palette: Materials & Process

FireSmart BC’s zoned approach breaks a property into rings extending outward from the structure, and it’s the mid-range zones — roughly 1.5 to 30 metres out — where plant choice has the most influence over how fire and embers move through a landscape. Inside that band, we work from a set of general, defensible principles rather than a fixed proprietary species list, because the right palette always depends on your specific lot, sun exposure, and existing vegetation:

Low-resin, high-moisture-content species. We favour deciduous shrubs and perennials with a naturally higher water content over resinous, oily conifers — species like ornamental junipers and cedars carry far more combustible fuel than a well-watered deciduous shrub bed.

Discontinuous fuel, not continuous hedges. Dense, unbroken hedgerows let fire run bed to bed. We break up plantings into separated islands with gravel, paver, or mulch gaps between them, so there’s no continuous path of fuel from the property line to the house.

Vertical and horizontal spacing. Mature plant height and canopy spread are mapped against the structure and against each other, keeping taller shrubs and any trees clear of eaves, vents, and windows, and keeping ground-level plantings from touching upward into shrub or tree canopy — the ladder that lets a small ground fire become a bigger one.

Ongoing pruning and deadwood removal. Fire-resistant planting isn’t a one-time install. We design beds that are realistic to maintain — removing dead and dying material, keeping plants irrigated through dry months, and pruning to preserve the spacing the design depends on. We handle the design and build; keeping that maintenance rhythm going is on the homeowner or their landscaper of choice.
