Built-In BBQ Islands in the Okanagan
A masonry BBQ island is the simplest way to turn a patio into a real cooking and entertaining space — a permanent grill, real counter space, and storage, built to handle Okanagan winters without a cover.

Custom outdoor kitchens generally range from $15,000 to $100,000+, depending on their size, cabinetry, countertops, masonry, appliances and utility connections.
This calculator provides an early budget range only and is not a formal quote. Final pricing depends on site access, existing conditions, excavation, grading, drainage, material selections, engineering, permits, electrical and plumbing requirements, and the final approved design. Pricing is shown in Canadian dollars and excludes GST unless otherwise stated. A site consultation is required to provide an accurate proposal.
Not Every Backyard Needs a Full Kitchen
A full outdoor kitchen with a fridge, sink, and bar seating is a serious investment, and not every homeowner wants that much infrastructure. A built-in BBQ island is the scaled-down version that still solves the actual problem: a freestanding grill on a patio that looks unfinished, has nowhere to set a plate down, and gets pushed into a shed every fall. We build the island as a permanent masonry structure — grill housing, flanking counter space, and enclosed storage below — sized to fit the grill you already own or want, and positioned as part of the patio layout rather than bolted on as an afterthought. It is the right scope for homeowners who want to cook outside often, without taking on a full kitchen build.
Built-In BBQ Islands: Materials & Process
Every island starts with a concrete block or steel-framed core built to the exact dimensions of your grill, with proper ventilation and clearance so the unit performs safely and the finish materials around it are protected from heat. That core is then faced in stone veneer, brick, or stucco to match your patio and home — the same masonry language we use across our retaining wall and paver work, so the island reads as part of the landscape instead of a standalone box. Countertops are typically granite or a comparable dense natural stone, chosen for their resistance to Okanagan freeze-thaw cycles and UV exposure over years of outdoor use. Storage cabinets below the counter use stainless steel or marine-grade doors rated for outdoor conditions, and we route in space for accessories like a side burner or bar fridge if you want to add them now or down the road. Because the structure is fully custom, we can size the grill bay to almost any built-in unit on the market and adjust the counter run and storage to fit the footprint of your patio.

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners
“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
Common Questions About Built-In BBQ Islands
How is a BBQ island different from a full outdoor kitchen?
A full outdoor kitchen with a fridge, sink, and bar seating is a serious investment; a BBQ island is the scaled-down version that still solves the real problem — a freestanding grill that looks unfinished, has nowhere to set a plate, and gets pushed into a shed every fall.
What’s included in a standard BBQ island build?
A permanent masonry structure with grill housing, flanking counter space, and enclosed storage below, sized to your grill and your patio.
Can a BBQ island be upgraded to a full kitchen later?
It depends on the original design and available space — we can discuss future-proofing the layout during your consultation if you think you may want to expand later.
Do BBQ islands need the same permits as a full kitchen?
It depends on scope, especially if gas lines are involved — we handle the permitting and inspection process as part of the build either way.
