No two pieces of fieldstone are the same size, shape, or face, which means every course is a decision: which stone goes where, how it keys into the ones around it, and how the whole wall reads as a single line from ten feet back. That’s why natural stone work tends to land on estate properties, waterfront acreages, and homes where the landscape design calls for a wall that looks quarried out of the hillside rather than built on top of it. It costs more per linear foot than block, and it should — you’re paying for material selection, hand-fitting, and a finished look that ages like it belongs there instead of like it was installed.
Natural Stone Retaining Walls: Materials & Process
We work in two structural approaches, and the right one depends on wall height, site exposure, and the look you’re after. Dry-fit (drystack) walls rely on the weight, shape, and friction of the stones themselves — no mortar, with gravel backfill and a compacted base doing the work of drainage. It’s the traditional method for lower garden walls, terracing, and rustic accents, and when it’s built properly by people who understand how stone locks together, it can outlast almost anything else in the yard. For taller structural walls, or wherever we’re carrying real load — a driveway edge, a walkout patio, a slope with real consequence if it fails — we mortar the stone over a reinforced concrete or block core and finish with a full stone face or veneer, so you get engineered strength underneath and a genuine stone surface on top. Either way, it starts the same: proper excavation, a compacted gravel base, drainage behind the wall so hydrostatic pressure never becomes the wall’s problem, and stone selected and sequenced before a single piece is set permanently. We source quarried and fieldstone suited to Okanagan conditions — freeze-thaw cycles, dry summers, and the region’s natural stone palette — so the wall reads as part of the land, not an import.
