Most xeriscape conversations start with rock and hardscape — and that is often where the design work stops. Native plant design flips the order. Before we talk gravel or boulders, we build a plant palette from species that are genuinely native to the BC interior and the Okanagan valley: plants that evolved here to handle our free-draining glacial soils, our long dry summers, and our winter freeze-thaw swings without irrigation, fertilizer, or seasonal replacement. The rock and hardscape still matter — they frame the beds, manage drainage, and hold moisture around root zones — but the planting plan is the design, not the leftover space between the stone.

There is an ecological argument for this too. Species that are native to the Okanagan support the pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects that already rely on them, in a way that imported ornamentals generally do not. A bed built from bunchgrasses, saskatoon, and native wildflowers is doing more than looking tidy — it is functioning like a small piece of the surrounding landscape instead of fighting it. That is also why native beds hold up better over time with less input: the plants are not fragile transplants from a wetter climate struggling to survive here, they are exactly where they are supposed to be.

Native Plant Design: Materials & Process

We layer plant selections by function and bloom sequence so a bed reads as intentional in April and in August, not just green for a few weeks in June. Structural natives — saskatoon, Rocky Mountain juniper, Ponderosa pine, and native willow where the site allows — anchor the layout, while drought-hardy perennials and grasses fill in around them: blanketflower, yarrow, rabbitbrush, wild lupine, and native bunchgrasses like blue grama and needle-and-thread. We work all of it into the same free-draining gravel and amended mineral-soil base a xeriscape needs anyway, so the hardscape and the planting genuinely share one system rather than sitting on top of each other.

We also group plants by water need — a practice called hydrozoning — so the handful of thirstier accent plants live together in one zone instead of forcing irrigation across an entire bed to keep a few outliers alive. New plantings go in with a deep, tapering watering-in schedule that supports root establishment for the first one to two growing seasons, after which most native selections stand on natural rainfall alone. Mulch, correct planting depth, and soil that has not been over-amended with rich topsoil all matter here — native species generally perform worse, not better, in soil that is too fertile for what they evolved in. Ongoing upkeep is limited to a spring cleanup and occasional pruning, with none of the seasonal color rotation or weekly irrigation cycle a conventional planting bed demands.
