Before You Call a Contractor

You’re Not Alone If…

You’ve gotten quotes that feel priced to make a small job go away, with no real explanation of the cost.

You’re not sure if your sloping yard, aging retaining wall, or bare patch of dirt needs a designer, a mason, or just a plan.

You’ve been burned by a contractor who disappeared after the deposit, or a project with no single point of contact.

You want to see your finished yard before anyone touches a shovel, not find out after it’s already built.

A Village Wrapped in Forest

Lumby sits where the Monashee Mountains meet the Shuswap River and Bessette Creek, a village built on a forestry heritage and surrounded by the kind of treed, rural acreages that draw people out of the Vernon core. Many Lumby properties, whether in the village itself, out toward Cherryville, or up the Creighton Valley Road, back directly onto forested Crown land or sit within a dense stand of timber. That proximity to the trees is exactly why so much of our work here starts with FireSmart Defensive Landscaping. Creating a properly zoned, non-combustible or fire-resistant buffer around a home does not mean stripping a lot bare; done well, it means thoughtful plant selection, hardscape spacing, and material choices that reduce wildfire risk while still giving a rural Lumby property the natural, established look homeowners want.

Bigger Lots, Careful Site Assessment

It is a different design brief than a subdivision lot in Vernon or a waterfront property on Kalamalka Lake. Lumby acreages tend to be larger, often a half acre to several acres, with irregular grades, existing timber stands, and outbuildings like shops or barns to work around. Some properties border Bessette Creek or sit within the Creighton Valley floodplain, which adds drainage and erosion considerations to the plan. Others climb the benches above the Shuswap River, where south-facing slopes bring more sun exposure and drier, rockier soil than the shaded, timbered lots below. We start every Lumby project with a full site assessment, mapping the tree cover, slope, drainage, and fire-risk zoning before a single design line is drawn, so the finished landscape works with the property rather than fighting it.

A Working-Forest Character Worth Keeping

Lumby has held onto its working-forest, agricultural identity even as it has grown into a popular alternative to town living for people who want more land and more distance between neighbours. That character shapes what a finished landscape needs to do here: it has to hold its own against a backdrop of real forest and open sky, not compete with it. Homeowners who move out from Vernon or the Lower Mainland to a Lumby acreage are usually drawn by the privacy and the mountain access toward Mabel Lake and Sugar Lake, and they want a yard that feels like an extension of that setting rather than a suburban lawn dropped into the trees.

What We Build

Landscaping Services in Lumby

FireSmart Defensive Landscaping leads the list for Lumby's forest-edge properties, but a defensible-space plan is only the starting point. Most of our Lumby clients pair it with retaining walls to manage sloped terrain, a paver patio or driveway, and drought-tolerant xeriscaping that keeps the property looking cared for through the North Okanagan's dry summer months.

We are proud to bring the same design-and-build standard to homes throughout Lumby and the surrounding rural area, from village lots to acreages up the valley toward Cherryville and Mabel Lake. Every FireSmart plan we build is paired with the same attention to design detail we bring to a patio, water feature, or planting bed in Vernon or Kelowna, because defensible space and a beautiful yard are not mutually exclusive goals. What Clients Say

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners

★★★★★
4.6 / 5 Based on 58 Google reviews · Design-and-build projects across the Okanagan Valley
“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”

Designing and Building for Lumby’s Climate and Terrain

Designing for the Wildland-Urban Interface

Lumby’s setting in the Monashee foothills means higher rainfall and denser forest cover than the valley bottom around Vernon or Kalamalka Lake, which supports lusher plant growth but also means more properties sit within, or immediately adjacent to, the wildland-urban interface. For these forest-edge lots, we design with FireSmart principles in mind from the first site visit: keeping the “immediate zone” within 1.5 metres of the home clear of combustible mulch and shrubs, choosing fire-resistant plant species with higher moisture content over resinous conifers close to structures, and using non-combustible hardscape materials such as pavers, stone, and gravel to break up fuel continuity. Retaining walls and graded pathways can also do double duty on Lumby’s sloped, timbered lots, managing runoff from spring snowmelt while creating the kind of defensible-space separation FireSmart guidelines recommend.

Elevation Varies Block by Block

Elevation and exposure vary block by block in Lumby, more than most Okanagan communities. A lot on the valley floor near the village centre can carry a noticeably different frost pattern and soil moisture profile than one a few hundred metres up a Creighton Valley bench, so plant hardiness and irrigation planning have to be site-specific rather than assumed from a general Okanagan hardiness zone. Heavier clay and forest-duff soils are common under mature timber, which changes how we grade for drainage and prep planting beds compared to the sandier soils closer to the lake in Vernon. Spring runoff off the surrounding slopes is another factor we plan around, especially for retaining walls and paver surfaces near a creek or drainage swale. If your property borders Crown forest or a treed ravine, our FireSmart Defensive Landscaping service is the right place to start; from there we can layer in xeriscaping, lighting, or a paver patio that fits both the terrain and the wildfire-risk profile of your specific lot.

Snowmelt Shapes Our Build Schedule

Timing matters too. Snowmelt off the Monashee slopes tends to linger longer in Lumby than it does down at lake level in Vernon, which pushes our planting and hardscape installation windows a few weeks later in spring on the higher, shaded lots. We build that into every project schedule, along with a fuel-management mindset for anything planted within the first several metres of a home: species selection, spacing, and pruning plans that keep a landscape looking full and intentional while still meeting FireSmart spacing recommendations between trees, shrubs, and structures. The goal on every Lumby property is the same one we bring to a lakefront lot in Kelowna or a hillside build in West Kelowna, a finished space that is genuinely built for where it sits, not a generic plan dropped onto the terrain.
