We favour textured, tumbled, or shot-blasted paver and natural stone finishes over polished surfaces for anything within splash distance of the water — smooth, glossy stone looks great in a photo and turns dangerous the moment it gets wet. Lighter colour tones and materials like travertine are popular choices around Okanagan pools specifically because they absorb less heat than dark concrete or dark pavers, which matters when the deck is going to spend all afternoon in direct sun. Underneath, the deck gets its own compacted aggregate base and bedding layer, graded to slope water away from the pool edge rather than toward it. Where the deck meets the coping, we detail the joint carefully so the transition is clean, level, and won’t trap water or shift with our winter freeze-thaw cycles.
