Kalamalka Lake is one of the few marl lakes in North America, and that turquoise water is exactly why Coldstream waterfront property carries a premium — and exactly why the province is unforgiving about what happens on the banks above it. Loose fill, unstabilized slopes, or a wall built without proper drainage doesn’t just look bad; it washes silt straight into the lake, which is the kind of thing that draws attention from the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation and the Ministry of Environment. Add in Coldstream’s clay-heavy bench soils, freeze-thaw cycling off the lake in winter, and the wave and boat-wake action that hammers the shoreline all summer, and you get a slope that wants to slump if it isn’t engineered correctly.
