Pool Building in Kelowna, BC
Kelowna is the Okanagan’s benchmark for luxury pools — lake-view backyards, hillside lots, and homeowners who expect the pool to look as good as the view it sits in front of. It’s also where the terrain works hardest against a standard pool build, which is exactly where design-and-build experience pays off.

Complete pool and pool-deck projects generally range from $110,000 to $300,000+, depending on the pool type, site access, excavation, deck material, utilities, fencing and surrounding landscaping.
This calculator provides an early budget range only and is not a formal quote. Final pricing depends on site access, existing conditions, excavation, grading, drainage, material selections, engineering, permits, electrical and plumbing requirements, and the final approved design. Pricing is shown in Canadian dollars and excludes GST unless otherwise stated. A site consultation is required to provide an accurate proposal.
Building for a hillside, not a flat yard
Most of Kelowna’s best pool sites aren’t level. From the benches above Upper and Lower Mission to the slopes of Kettle Valley and Wilden, the lots that come with the lake and valley views homeowners want are also the ones with grade change, exposed bedrock, and retaining structure to account for before a single shovel of pool excavation happens. A pool built here has to be engineered around that slope from day one — shoring, drainage, and retaining walls integrated into the pool design rather than bolted on afterward, so the deck reads as one continuous space instead of a pool dropped onto a hillside. Get the grading and drainage wrong on a slope like this and the consequence isn’t cosmetic — it’s water finding its way behind a pool shell or undermining a retaining wall two seasons later.
Kelowna’s summers also push pool season longer and harder than almost anywhere else in the valley — more consecutive weeks above 30°C, more UV exposure, more hours of pool-deck traffic in bare feet. That changes what we spec for coping, decking, and surrounding hardscape; a finish that looks fine on a shaded Vernon patio can get uncomfortably hot or fade faster on an open, south-facing Kelowna lot. And because so much of the premium Kelowna market sits inside bare-land strata communities and hillside subdivisions, a pool project here usually has to clear both a City of Kelowna building permit and a strata or architectural review before construction starts — pool fencing and setback requirements included — something we account for at the design stage, not after plans are already drawn. It’s the combination of terrain, climate, and approvals that makes pool building in Kelowna a different job than pool building almost anywhere else in the region, and it’s why we treat every Kelowna pool as a site-engineering project first and a pool second.
The slope that makes a Kelowna lot demanding to build on is often the same slope that makes it worth building on. A pool set into a hillside can be positioned to hold sightlines out over the lake rather than competing with them — deck and coping kept low, planting used to frame the view instead of blocking it, and the pool edge itself treated as part of the composition rather than an afterthought sitting in the middle of the yard. That only works when the retaining, drainage, and pool structure are planned together from the start, which is the difference between a pool that feels like it belongs on the property and one that looks bolted onto whatever flat pad the excavator could carve out.
Serving Kelowna Since 2018
We’ve built and installed pools for homeowners across Kelowna’s lake-view neighbourhoods, from hillside lots that needed retaining and drainage work before the pool shell went in, to flatter lower-bench properties built for entertaining. Every project pairs the pool itself with the surrounding hardscape, planting, and lighting design so the finished space works as a whole yard, not a pool with a fence around it. You can browse examples of our completed pool and outdoor living projects on our our work page.

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners
“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
Common Questions About Pool Building in Kelowna
Can you build a pool on a sloped Okanagan lot?
Yes, and it is common. A lot of the properties we work on around Vernon, Kelowna, and Coldstream have grade changes, so we regularly pair a pool build with retaining walls to create a level, usable pool area.
Do I need a permit to build a pool?
Yes, in-ground pools require building and often electrical permits, along with pool safety fencing that meets your municipality’s bylaws. We handle the permit process and inspections as part of the project.
Why do Kelowna pool builds often need retaining walls too?
Most of Kelowna’s best pool sites — from the benches above Upper and Lower Mission to the slopes of Kettle Valley and Wilden — come with grade change, exposed bedrock, and retaining structure to account for before excavation ever starts, so a pool built here has to be engineered around that slope from day one.
Does bedrock affect pool excavation cost in Kelowna?
It can — exposed bedrock close to the surface changes excavation scope, which we assess and account for in your estimate rather than surprising you with it mid-build.
