The Brief

Waterfront properties along Kalamalka Lake and the other Coldstream-area shorelines come with a layer of complexity most backyard projects never touch: any work below the natural boundary, or that alters the bank itself, typically needs sign-off from provincial and sometimes local authorities before a shovel goes in the ground. A property like this usually comes to us with an eroding or aging shoreline edge that needs to be stabilized and made usable again, but the homeowner has learned partway through their research that the retaining wall itself is only half the job — the permitting is the other half, and it has to happen first.

The Approach

We treat foreshore and shoreline work as a coordination problem as much as a construction one. Before any wall design is finalized, we work through what the relevant approvals actually require for that specific bank — how close to the water’s edge work can happen, what materials and slopes are acceptable, and what documentation needs to accompany an application. Coldstream’s shoreline is also part of a sensitive lake ecosystem, so designs are built to minimize disturbance to the bank and any riparian vegetation, rather than simply pushing a wall as close to the water as possible. That means the engineering and the paperwork move together: the wall design has to satisfy both structural requirements and the conditions attached to the permit, and neither gets finalized in isolation from the other.

What We Built

On a project like this, the retaining wall itself is built using engineered segmental block or natural stone, sized and drained to handle the freeze-thaw cycles and saturated soils that come with sitting right at the waterline — proper granular backfill, weep drainage, and a footing set below frost depth are non-negotiable this close to the lake. Because so much of a waterfront yard’s value is in how the finished bank looks and functions day to day, we also look for opportunities to soften the hardscape with landscaped water elements along the property, so the shoreline reads as a designed feature rather than just an engineered barrier. Every step of construction is sequenced to stay inside the approved permit conditions, with any required inspections or reporting handled as part of the build rather than left for the homeowner to chase down afterward.

What Clients Say

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners

“Taylor and his crew of expert landscapers did a fantastic job. I had a retaining wall that was falling down and they rebuilt it much better than was done before. They were very courteous and listened to my concerns and needs, and their work exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Kalagan Outdoor Design to anyone wanting professional landscaping done in Vernon.”
