The Brief

New-build homes in Lake Country’s growing subdivisions are typically handed over with a finished house and a yard of compacted subsoil, construction debris, and not much else. A homeowner in this position usually comes to us right around possession, wanting the outdoor half of their new property brought up to the same standard as the home itself — a real patio to step out onto, a durable path from the driveway to the front door, and a yard that’s graded and prepped rather than left as raw builder’s fill. The goal on a project like this is less about a dramatic redesign and more about turning “move-in ready” into “actually finished.”

The Approach

New-construction lots in the Okanagan come with their own set of ground conditions: heavily compacted fill from construction equipment, inconsistent grading left by the builder, and often a mix of clay and rocky subsoil that doesn’t drain the way a mature yard would. Before any hardscaping goes in, we assess drainage and grading around the foundation first, since a new home is the easiest time to get water moving away from the house correctly — it only gets harder once lawn, planting, and fencing are in place. We also work within the practical realities of a new-construction timeline: coordinating around other trades still finishing up, protecting adjacent new concrete and siding, and sequencing the work so the property is usable as soon as possible rather than a construction zone for months after the family has moved in.

What We Built

The core of this package centers on our paver patio and driveway approach: excavating to proper depth, laying and compacting a crushed-gravel base in lifts, and setting concrete pavers with polymeric jointing sand so the surface stays stable and weed-free through freeze-thaw cycles. That same base-and-compaction method carries through to connecting walkways, tying the driveway, entry, and back patio together into one consistent hardscape rather than a collection of disconnected slabs. As with every new construction landscape package, the hardscape is paired with basic grading and turf or planting prep so the builder’s bare lot becomes a yard the homeowners can actually start using and building on.
