Fiberglass pools come from a factory in a fixed shape and size. Concrete pools are formed and poured on your site, which means the shape, depth, steps, sun shelves, and swim-outs are all decided by your yard and your family — not by what fits on a delivery truck. If your lot is narrow, sloped, waterfront, or an irregular shape, concrete is usually the only option that lets us use the full space well. It’s also the choice for anyone who wants a pool deeper than a standard fiberglass shell allows, a vanishing edge, a sun shelf with bubblers, or a shape that follows the natural line of a retaining wall or patio rather than a preset curve.
The tradeoff is time: a concrete pool build takes considerably longer than a fiberglass installation because of excavation, steel, forming, the gunite or shotcrete pour, curing, tile and coping, and interior finish coats, each with its own cure and inspection window. We walk every client through the realistic timeline before excavation starts, so there are no surprises partway through a build season.
Concrete Pools: Materials & Process
We excavate to your engineered shape, set steel reinforcement, and apply gunite or shotcrete to form the shell. Once the structure has cured, the pool is finished with your choice of interior — plaster, pebble, or quartz aggregate — and the surrounding hardscape is built to match: stone or paver coping, a poured or paver deck, and integrated features like tanning ledges, spillways, or raised bond beams where the design calls for them. Because the shell is site-built, we can tie the pool directly into a broader hardscape plan — a patio, an outdoor kitchen, or a retaining wall system — so the pool reads as one continuous space rather than a feature dropped into the yard afterward.
Every concrete pool we build is engineered for our climate: proper freeze-thaw detailing, correct steel coverage, and a finish schedule that accounts for Okanagan winters. We handle the structural engineering, permitting coordination, and inspection scheduling as part of the build, so you’re working with one team from excavation through to the first swim.
