Plunge Pools in the Okanagan

A compact, cold-water pool built for smaller Okanagan lots — sized for daily swims, cold-therapy soaks, and quick backyard relief from summer heat, without the footprint or cost of a full-size pool.

Complete pool and pool-deck projects generally range from $110,000 to $300,000+, depending on the pool type, site access, excavation, deck material, utilities, fencing and surrounding landscaping.

What Makes This Different

Big Impact, Small Footprint

Not every Okanagan property has room for a full-size pool — and not every homeowner wants one. Plunge pools are built for the lots a traditional pool doesn’t fit: narrow infill yards in Vernon, tight side yards on hillside builds in West Kelowna, or lake-view properties where every square foot of usable grade is precious. They tuck into a corner, a deck extension, or a courtyard and still deliver a real swimming and soaking experience.

Plunge pools have also become the go-to feature for homeowners chasing the cold-therapy and wellness trend — a dedicated cold-water plunge for recovery, paired with a sauna or hot tub for contrast therapy, without dedicating the yard to a full aquatic centre. Because the water volume and excavation are so much smaller than a conventional pool, plunge pools generally come in at a lower price point and a shorter build timeline, making them an accessible entry point into pool ownership for clients who want the lifestyle without the scale.

How We Build It

Plunge Pools: Materials & Process

We build plunge pools using the same shotcrete/gunite construction as our full-size pools, which lets us shape the pool to fit an irregular lot line, a sloped hillside lot, or a specific spot along a view corridor — something a pre-formed fiberglass shell can’t always do. The concrete shell is engineered to BC building code, waterproofed, and finished with your choice of plaster or tile before we integrate the coping and surrounding hardscape.

For clients using their plunge pool for cold-water therapy, we spec a chiller unit alongside the standard filtration and heating equipment, so the water can be held in a consistent cold range independent of the season or the sun. We also design the plunge pool as part of the broader hardscape — tying the coping into a paver or natural stone patio, adding a shade structure or privacy planting, and running conduit for landscape lighting so the space works day and night. Because a plunge pool needs less excavation and equipment than a full pool, most builds move from design to swimming considerably faster.

What Clients Say

“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
FAQ

Common Questions About Plunge Pools

What is a plunge pool, and who is it for?

A smaller-footprint pool built for lots a traditional pool doesn’t fit — narrow infill yards, tight side yards on hillside builds, or lake-view properties where every square foot of usable grade is precious.

Can a plunge pool still deliver a real swimming experience?

Yes — plunge pools tuck into a corner, deck extension, or courtyard and still deliver a real swimming and soaking experience, just at a smaller scale than a traditional pool.

Is a plunge pool cheaper than a full-size pool?

Generally yes, since excavation, shell, and decking footprint are all smaller — use the cost calculator on our main Pool Building page for a starting estimate.

Why are plunge pools popular on waterfront lots specifically?

They have become the go-to feature where every square foot of usable, view-preserving grade matters, letting homeowners add a pool without sacrificing the yard space a lake view depends on.
