Pool & Landscape Integration in the Okanagan

A pool is only as good as the space around it. We design the deck, the planting, the lighting, and the water all together, so the finished yard reads as one composition instead of a pool dropped into a lawn.

Complete pool and pool-deck projects generally range from $110,000 to $300,000+, depending on the pool type, site access, excavation, deck material, utilities, fencing and surrounding landscaping.

What Makes This Different

One design, not three separate contractors

Most pool builders hand you a hole in the ground and a deck edge, and leave the rest — the patio, the planting, the lighting, the fencing lines — for you to sort out afterward with a second and third contractor. That’s how you end up with a paver pattern that fights the pool’s coping, shade trees planted where the pump shed should go, or landscape lighting added as an afterthought that never quite reaches the water. Because Kalagan designs and builds pools, patios, planting, and lighting under one roof, we sequence the whole yard from the first sketch: pool shape and coping height inform the patio layout, the patio layout informs where planting beds and privacy screening go, and the lighting plan is drawn before a single paver is set. The result is a backyard that was clearly designed as one space, not assembled from parts.

How We Build It

Pool & Landscape Integration: Materials & Process

Integration starts with grading and drainage, since a pool changes how water moves across the whole property — deck slopes, planting bed elevations, and any retaining work all need to route surface water away from the pool shell and equipment pad, not toward it. From there we coordinate coping and deck material as one selection: a paver or natural stone deck chosen to stay cool underfoot, sit flush with the coping, and tie visually into any patio or walkway elsewhere on the property. Planting beds are set back and layered to soften the hard edges of the pool structure without dropping leaf litter into the water, and we favour lower-maintenance, non-invasive-root species near the shell and plumbing runs. Landscape lighting is run in the same trenching pass as pool electrical where possible, so the deck, water feature accents, and surrounding beds are lit as one evening scene rather than wired separately down the road. Where a pool sits near a slope or property line, we also loop in retaining wall and fencing considerations early, so pool safety-code requirements are met without the yard feeling boxed in.

What Clients Say

★★★★★
4.6 / 5 Based on 58 Google reviews · Design-and-build projects across the Okanagan Valley
“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
FAQ

Common Questions About Pool & Landscape Integration

Why does pool and landscape integration matter?

Most pool builders hand you a hole in the ground and a deck edge, leaving the patio, planting, lighting, and fencing lines for you to sort out afterward with a second and third contractor — which is how you end up with a paver pattern fighting the pool’s coping or shade trees planted where the pump shed should go.

Does Kalagan design the pool and surrounding landscape together?

Yes — since we design and build pools, patios, planting, and lighting as one team, the whole property is planned together from day one instead of stitched together after the fact.

Can existing landscaping be integrated around a new pool?

Yes — we can plan a new pool build around mature trees, existing hardscape, or other features you want to keep, coordinating the whole design rather than treating the pool as an isolated project.

Does integrated design cost more than a standalone pool build?

Not necessarily more overall — coordinating the pool, patio, planting, and lighting as one project often avoids the rework and mismatched materials that come from hiring separate contractors in sequence.
