Pondless Waterfalls in the Okanagan
The sound and movement of a natural waterfall, with no open pond, no standing water, and a fraction of the upkeep. It’s the water feature most Okanagan families ask for first.

Professionally installed fountainscapes typically range from $7,500 to $60,000+, depending on the number of features, basin size, access, lighting and surrounding landscaping.
This calculator provides an early budget range only and is not a formal quote. Final pricing depends on site access, existing conditions, excavation, grading, drainage, material selections, engineering, permits, electrical and plumbing requirements, and the final approved design. Pricing is shown in Canadian dollars and excludes GST unless otherwise stated. A site consultation is required to provide an accurate proposal.
All the sound, none of the standing water
A traditional pond holds its water at the surface, which means algae control, netting for leaves, and a constant eye on water levels — not to mention a real safety question if you have young kids or pets in the yard. A pondless waterfall solves for all of it by design. The stream still cascades over real stone and the sound still carries across the patio, but every drop of water disappears into a hidden basin buried below grade and gets pulled straight back up through the system. There’s nothing standing at the surface to fall into, nothing exposed for debris to collect in, and no open water for mosquitoes to breed in over a Okanagan summer.
That combination is why pondless waterfalls have become one of the most requested water features we build. Homeowners get the calming, private feel of moving water without taking on the ongoing care that a full pond system demands.
Pondless Waterfalls: Materials & Process
We start by reading the grade of your yard, since a pondless waterfall works best when it has a natural fall to follow — a sloped bed, the edge of a retaining wall, or a rise built specifically to carry it. We excavate a below-grade reservoir sized to the flow rate of the feature, line it, and set a submersible pump and plumbing that recirculates water continuously through the system rather than drawing fresh water each cycle.
Above that reservoir, we build the visible waterfall out of natural stone selected and set to look like it belongs on your property, not like it was dropped in. Boulders and flagstone are fitted so water sheets and splits naturally as it falls, then the entire basin is capped with a layer of river rock and gravel that hides the mechanics completely and lets water drain straight back through to the reservoir below. The result reads as a natural rock outcropping with a stream running through it — the pump, liner, and basin are never visible.
Because the system is self-contained, a pondless waterfall pairs cleanly with almost anything else on your property: a patio edge, a planting bed, a xeriscape design, or the face of a retaining wall. It doesn’t need its own dedicated zone the way a full pond does, which gives us a lot more freedom in where we place it.

Trusted By Okanagan Homeowners
“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
Common Questions About Pondless Waterfalls
Why choose a pondless waterfall over a traditional pond?
A traditional pond holds standing water at the surface, which means algae control, netting for leaves, and a real safety consideration with young kids or pets. A pondless waterfall solves all of it — the stream still cascades over real stone and the sound still carries, but every drop disappears into a hidden basin buried below grade.
Is a pondless waterfall safer for families with young kids?
Yes — since there is no exposed standing water or open basin at the surface, it is one of the safer water feature options for households with children or pets in the yard.
How much maintenance does a pondless waterfall need?
Minimal compared to a traditional pond — mainly topping up water lost to evaporation and an occasional pump and basin check.
Can a pondless waterfall be built into an existing slope?
Yes — it is often the ideal solution for a natural grade change, letting the waterfall follow the existing slope rather than being forced into a flat yard.
