Putting Green & Turf Estate: A backyard putting green and artificial turf build

The Brief

Living inside a golf community like Predator Ridge tends to raise the bar for what a backyard should be able to do. This homeowner wanted more than a lawn to look at — they wanted a putting surface they could actually practice on, surrounded by turf that would stay green and tidy through the dry Okanagan summer without the water restrictions and upkeep that come with natural grass at this elevation. It’s the kind of request that plays directly to the golf-course identity of the neighbourhood itself.

The Approach

A backyard putting green is a different discipline than a standard turf lawn. The rootzone has to be shaped and compacted with real subtlety — subtle breaks and consistent, true roll matter as much as the finished look does — while the surrounding turf areas are built for durability and appearance rather than ball performance. Predator Ridge’s exposed, rocky terrain and long dry stretches also mean drainage has to be engineered in from the base up, so the surface stays flat and doesn’t develop low spots or puddling once the snow melts each spring.

What We Built

We built a putting-green-specific synthetic surface over a shaped and compacted base, with the short, dense pile and firm footing a true putting green needs, transitioning into a surrounding artificial turf lawn with a longer, softer blade for everyday use. Edges were cut clean against existing beds and hardscape, and the whole system was set on a well-drained aggregate base suited to the site’s terrain. The result is a backyard that looks sharp year-round and gives the homeowner a private putting surface that’s ready to use any time, without a single watering schedule or mowing pass to think about.
