You’re Not Alone If…
You’ve gotten quotes that feel priced to make a small job go away, with no real explanation of the cost.
You’re not sure if your sloping yard, aging retaining wall, or bare patch of dirt needs a designer, a mason, or just a plan.
You’ve been burned by a contractor who disappeared after the deposit, or a project with no single point of contact.
You want to see your finished yard before anyone touches a shovel, not find out after it’s already built.

Kelowna anchors a metro area of roughly 254,000 people within a city of about 145,000, and it shows: this is the commercial, medical, and cultural hub of the entire Okanagan Valley, home to Kelowna General Hospital, UBC Okanagan, Kelowna International Airport, and a wine and tourism economy that draws visitors to the region year-round. That status shows up in the pace and scale of building across the city, and nowhere is it more visible than in Kelowna’s established luxury nodes. Upper Mission and Lower Mission stretch along the benches and shoreline south of downtown, where lots often step down toward Okanagan Lake in tiers that call for retaining walls, terraced patios, and lighting plans built for elevation change rather than a flat backyard. Kettle Valley, laid out along the old rail grade above East Kelowna, pairs newer architecture with sweeping valley views and steep, rocky building sites. Wilden, tucked against Dilworth Mountain on the city’s north side, mixes forest-edge lots with a more contemporary build style, and its proximity to the treeline makes fire-conscious landscaping a real, practical consideration rather than an afterthought.
Design-Conscious Homeowners Expect More
These are also some of the more established, design-conscious pockets of the Okanagan, where homeowners are comparing their outdoor space to the architecture of the house itself, not treating it as an afterthought. A pool deck in Upper Mission or a courtyard in Kettle Valley is expected to read as an extension of the home’s design language, built with the same attention to material, proportion, and detail as the interior. That’s the level we design and build to on every Kelowna property, whether it’s a compact lot closer to downtown or a half-acre hillside site with a lake view.
Featured Projects Near Kelowna
We’ve completed two of our featured projects within a short drive of each other in this market: Lakeside Retreat in Kelowna and Modern Hillside just across Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna. Both speak to the same reality every Kelowna homeowner already knows — a great outdoor space here has to hold its own against the view, the climate, and the terrain, all at once. Vernon, where our design studio is based, is roughly 45 to 55 minutes north up the highway, close enough that our design and build teams are on Kelowna sites regularly without treating the drive as a barrier to the level of service or communication a client receives.
Renewing Kelowna’s Established Neighbourhoods
Beyond the newer luxury nodes, Kelowna is still a city built around its waterfront, from Waterfront Park and the Cultural District downtown to the older, mature neighborhoods that ring the city core. Many of these established properties are working with landscaping that hasn’t been touched since the original build, and a full redesign, whether it’s a paver driveway replacing cracked concrete, a new outdoor kitchen off the back of the house, or a water feature anchoring a previously flat, empty yard, can transform how a family actually uses the property day to day. Whether a project is a ground-up build in a new subdivision or a renovation on an established Kelowna lot, our approach stays the same: one connected design that accounts for the site’s grade, sun exposure, and sightlines before a single paver or plant goes in the ground.

Lakeside Retreat
Lakeside Retreat is one of our signature Kelowna builds, and it’s a good reference point for what a full design-and-build project can look like on a lake-influenced property in this market: hardscape, planting, water, and lighting designed together as one connected outdoor living space rather than as separate add-on projects. For a look at a comparable hillside build just across the water, see Modern Hillside in West Kelowna, or browse our full projects gallery for more Okanagan work.

“Kalagan did an outstanding job on our major landscaping project that included two sets of stone steps, a large water feature, paving stone patio, several plant beds, irrigation system and lighting effects. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and ideas to the design process and was easy to work with. Communication was strong throughout the project and we heartily recommend Kalagan for your landscaping project.”
“Kalagan Outdoor Design completely gutted our backyard, then installed irrigation, new lawn, trees, shrubs, rock bordered planting areas and a new stone patio. We are absolutely delighted with the result. It far exceeded our expectations which were quite ambitious from the start. The entire team was a pleasure to work with — professional, courteous, creative and hard working.”
Designing and Building for Kelowna’s Climate and Terrain
Climate, Soil, and Water Restrictions
Kelowna sits in USDA hardiness zone 6b, with hot, dry summers, cold winter snaps, and a lake-moderated microclimate that makes it one of the more favorable growing environments in the BC Interior, but still one with real limits. Frost heave is a genuine concern for patios, walkways, and retaining walls if the base isn’t engineered for our freeze-thaw cycles, and we design and build accordingly on every job. Summer water restrictions are also a fact of life here, which is exactly why xeriscaping and drought-tolerant planting design have become such a strong fit for Kelowna front and back yards, cutting irrigation demand without giving up a finished, layered look. Soils vary block by block across the city: heavier clay in older, lower-elevation neighborhoods near downtown, and rockier, thinner soils on the benchlands of Upper Mission, Kettle Valley, and Wilden, where excavation and drainage planning take on outsized importance.
Grading, Fire Risk, and Permitting
On the hillside lots that define so much of Kelowna’s luxury housing stock, elevation change is the defining design constraint on any project, and retaining walls become as much a structural necessity as a design opportunity, turning a sloped lot into a series of usable, level outdoor rooms with a view instead of a single unusable grade. For homes in Wilden, Kettle Valley, and other neighborhoods that back onto forested slopes and grassland interface, we also design with wildfire exposure in mind from the start. Our FireSmart Defensive Landscaping service builds defensible space, non-combustible hardscape zones, and fire-conscious plant choices directly into the overall design, rather than treating it as a separate retrofit after the fact. Given the pace of development and infill across Kelowna, we also help clients navigate the permitting and setback considerations that come with building retaining walls, pools, and other structures on city lots, so the finished project is both beautiful and built to last.
Timing Your Build Around Peak Season
Timing matters too. Kelowna’s peak tourism and wine-country season runs through the summer months, which is also our busiest install window, so homeowners planning a major project, particularly anything involving a pool, retaining walls, or a large paver patio, are best served by starting the design process in late winter or early spring to lock in a build slot before the season fills up. On hillside lots in Kettle Valley, Upper Mission, and Wilden, we also plan excavation and delivery access carefully around narrower roads and steep driveways, which is part of why our design phase always includes a full site assessment before we quote or schedule any Kelowna project.
