How We Build FireSmart Defensive Landscaping

We start with a site walk to map your property against FireSmart BC’s priority zones. Zone 1, the immediate 1.5 metres around your home and any attached structures, gets the strictest treatment — this is where embers most often ignite a house, so we clear it down to non-combustible surfaces: stone, pavers, decorative rock, or bare soil in place of bark mulch, wood chips, and anything resinous planted tight against siding. Zone 2 extends out to roughly 10 metres and is where we focus on spacing rather than elimination — breaking up continuous vegetation with paver pathways, patios, gravel beds, and hydrozoned planting so fire can’t travel unbroken from the tree line to your door.

Plant selection is where a lot of the design work happens. We favour species with high moisture content and low resin or oil content — deciduous shrubs and perennials over dense conifers, and irrigated planting beds over dry, untended ones. Mature trees close to the house get limbed up to remove ladder fuels (the low branches that let ground fire climb into the canopy), and we keep canopy spacing wide enough that fire can’t leap tree to tree. It depends on what’s there. Existing stone, concrete, or paver surfaces near the house usually stay as-is since they’re already non-combustible. Wood decking, bark mulch beds, and dense shrubs tight against siding are the typical items we address. We’ll walk the property with you and be specific about what needs to change versus what already meets the standard.
